Get to Know Me: The Scared Epicurean

Hey foodies! 👋🏽 If you’ve been following my food journey for a while—or even if you’re new here—welcome to The Scared Epicurean! I figured it’s long overdue that I properly introduce myself.

Who Am I?
I’m Vanessa, a 28-year-old foodie from Kingston, Jamaica, balancing life between my job, wellness, a social life, relationships and my passion for food. I grew up super shy and reserved and now I wouldn’t say I’m an introvert but I’m picky with who I let in and show different sides of me but I’m definitely more expressive and outspoken because my voice matters and life is worth living how I want to live it, period.
Why "The Scared Epicurean"?
I know, I know—the name is a little different! But here’s the story: I’ve always been a food lover at heart, but for years, I stuck to what I knew. I was hesitant (*read: scared*) to try new things. So you know, an Epicurean is someone who enjoys fine food and drink, and who has refined tastes. Then one day, I decided to push past that and embrace the adventure of food. Now, I’m here to inspire others to taste boldly, cook creatively, and enjoy every bite while making food an experience rather than just something for survival.

What Can You Expect from My Blog?
🍽️ Honest & fun food reviews– Whether it’s a cozy café in Kingston or a hidden gem on the North Coast, I love sharing my favorite food finds.
📍 Mixology– I love a good cocktail and I also love romanticizing moments so if I’m home and I’m having a movie night I wanna whip up something nice and I gotta pair that with a nice drink. So from time to time you’ll see some recipes from The Scared Bartender.

🍳 Easy, flavorful recipes– From quick weekday meals to indulgent treats, I experiment in the kitchen so you don’t have to! But keep in mind I’m not a chef just a girl who can do a thing.
A Few Fun Facts About Me:
🥘 Favorite Food- Stew Peas! Jamaicans say you shouldn’t eat this meal from random people, but I don’t care TIE ME and cook some good stew peas weekly and I’m yours.
❌ One food I just can’t do? Manish Water. This food was really passed down from our slave ancestors where every piece of the meat was utilized due to the little, they had respect how they could make something from nothing, but we need to let this go.
What else do I like?
Apart from food I’m also a plant lover, a book lover and a dog mom - fun fact I grew up a cat person and I’m still not entirely a dog person, but I love MY dog to the moon and back.
